- Story Text: British painter David Hockney has announced a
retrospective exhibition of his landscapes at the Georges
Ponpidou centre in Paris, 25 years after his last exhibition
in the city.
The exhibition called Space/Landscape will open on
January 28 and gathers together more than fifty paintings from
the last 40 years.
Speaking at a news conference on Sunday (Janaury 25),
Hockney said the main inspiration for the show was the Grand
Canyon landscape.
"(The) Grand Canyon is the world's biggest hole, you only
see it when you get at the edge of it.there is no
perspectives, no focus point. For an agoraphobic like me,
Grand Canyon has got a big fascination ".
He added "The point of the exhibition is the landscapes
begin 30 years ago. That's the point, that's what it's doing.
There's always been an interest in it, that's what the
exhibition tells you quite clearly. It was more focused in the
last few years but it's been there for 34 years."
Hockney said he wanted to make paintings without using new
technologies, as he had done in the past.
"I was keen to make new images without using new
technologies....When you work with
technology, you are at its mercy."
He called the show the beginning of "his middle period".
The 52-year-old artist has lived in California since 1964
and became famous in the sixties as part of the London Pop art
scene.Born to working-class parents in Bradford, northern
England, he is Britain's most popular contemporary artist.
