- Story Text: Australian David Graham and Hale Irwin of the United States won their semi-finals of the Piccadilly World Match Play golf Championship in the U.K. on Friday (8 October). Graham defeated Ray Floyd of the U.S. by one hole over 36 and Irwin defeated South African Gary Player by two holes.
SYNOPSIS: Graham, here making his first fairway shot of the day, started the match badly.
His opponent, Ray Floyd took a commanding lead over the first 18 holes
On the first hole, Graham found himself in a bunker. Throughout the morning round, his drives went astray and Floyd finished the first eighteen three up.
For Gary Player, the day was a continuation of a bad run. he had not won a tournament outside South Africa all season, and it was left to his opponent Hale Irwin to set the pace of the match.
Player finished the first eighteen, four holes down to Irwin who is defending the title he has won for the past two years at the Wentworth Gold Club.
Player's afternoon round recovery was not enough to win, and this was his final shot of the tournament.
At this stage, Irwin was unbeatable. But he clinched his place in the final with a well-applauded putt.
The final shot for Floyd who was in such a commanding position half way through the day.
The final green for Graham. The ball landed within easy putting distance of the hole. Floyd conceded and the match went to Graham who was to meet Hale Irwin in the final the following day.
