- Story Text: Veteran American diplomat, David Bruce, left Hong Kong on Monday (14 May) for the People's Republic of China where he will head the United States liaison office in Peking -- an embassy in all but name.
Mr. Drouce, who ??? 75, is responsible for consolidating the new ties between The People's Republic of China and the United States, established by U.S. President Nixon and his special envoy, Dr. Henry Kissinger, last year.
Accompanied by his wife, Evangeline, Mr. Bruce crossed into China through the border bridge at Lo Wu, and took the train. to the southern Chinese city of Canton. From there, he flew by air to Peking.
During his week-long stay in Hong Kong, Mr. Bruce spent most of his time in discussion with U.S. Consul-General, David Osborn, and experienced "China-watchers" on his staff.
Mr. Bruce has previously served as U.S. Ambassador to Britain, France, and West Germany, and headed the U.S. delegation at the Vietnam peace talks in Paris, France.
