IT STARTED OUT IN THE 1930S WHEN YOU THOUGHT OF A HARLEY AND YOU THOUGHT OF A FAT POLICEMAN. ALL THE THE MOVIES IN THE 1930S SHOWED FAT POLICEMEN RIDING HARLEYS. IT REALLY WASN'T TILL THE "WILD ONE" WITH MARLON BRANDO AND PETER FONDA IN 1963 THAT YOU GOT THE IMAGE OF HARLEYS BEING YOUTHFUL, REBEL RIDERS. SO YOU'VE GOT A STRANGE IMAGE OF HARLEYS." -------------------------------------------------------------------- Initials Script is copyright Reuters Limited. All rights reserved.

- Story Text: INTRO: Hundreds of Japanese Harley Davidson owners havedescended on the tiny hot spring resort of Kinugawa Onsen on Saturday (August 31) for the town's inaugural Harley festival.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Visitors to the first Kinugawa Harley Davidson festival turned out to watch the opening parade, visit the flee market jammed with Harley accessories, watch a fashion show and talk about their Harleys.
George Deaux, a Harley owner and professor at Keio University in Tokyo, said the image of the Harley Davidson had undergone great changes since the 1930s when it was associated with fat policemen in the United States.
In the 1960s the symbol of American motorcycling was associated with the drug-smuggling antics of Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper in the movie Easy Rider.
Some Harley owners said their bikes were like the most beautiful girls they had ever dated while Miss Harley Davidson 1993 Gina Galligan, in Japan to promote the festival, went as far as to say Harleys enhanced a man's sex appeal.
The United States embassy in Tokyo was quick to use the event as an opportunity to attack Japanese motorcycle laws which prevent riders from taking passengers on expressways. The United States insists that the law is holding back sales of Harleys.
