  • Story Text: Iranians in Tehran Thursday (January 16, 2025) celebrated news of the ceasefire deal agreed by Israel and militant group Hamas, expressing it as a victory for Palestinians and the broader Middle East.
    Many on the street welcomed the news, seeing it as a positive step towards ending the killing of civilians in Gaza. Others celebrated the ceasefire as a defeat for Israel, a sentiment reflected in various Iranian newspaper headlines, including “Netanyahu has kneeled" and “The surrendered murderer.”
    The complex ceasefire accord emerged on Wednesday (January 15) evening after mediation by Qatar, Egypt and the U.S., and aims to halt 15 months of bloodshed that devastated the coastal territory and inflamed the Middle East.
    The deal outlines a six-week initial ceasefire with the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.
    Hostages taken by Hamas would be freed in exchange for Palestinian prisoners detained by Israel.
