- Story Text:Before 15 months of war demolished Gaza, the enclave was home to 2.3 million people wedged between Israel and Egypt on a 40 km (25-mile) stretch of the Mediterranean coast.
Over the millennia, Gaza has served as a trading port for ancient Egyptians, Philistines, Romans, and Crusaders. Beneath its sands lie ruins from Alexander the Great’s siege of the city, Emperor Hadrian’s visit, Mongol raids, and the arrival of the Islamic armies 1,400 years ago. Napoleon and the Ottomans camped here and British armies passed through in World War One.
If successful, a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas would halt fighting that has razed much of heavily urbanised Gaza, killed over 46,000 people, and displaced most of its population, according to local authorities.
Hamas is expected to release the first hostages under a Gaza ceasefire deal on Sunday (19 January), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said on Friday
