- Story Text: The David Beckham roadshow has moved on to Thailand.
Real Madrid's new midfielder, on a promotional tour
, was driven from one of the country's most luxurious Spa resorts to
shoot a television advertisement in the Pranburi district about 250 km
south of Bangkok.
He arrived in Thailand on Sunday in a low-key trip his
sponsors are trying to keep low-key apparently after he was mobbed on
his arrival in Tokyo last week.
Beckham and wifel Victoria arrived at the airport before
being whisked to the exclusive Chiva-Som, one of Thailand's most
luxurious Spa resorts.
Beckham, on a promotional tour of Thailand caused a stir
after he left the resort early Monday morning when he stopped
his police motorcade to pay the Thai "wai", or clasped hand
greeting to some roadside shrines. He said he wanted to buy
six of them, possibly for his new home in Madrid.
Thais use the "wai" to say hello and goodbye but also to pay
respect to Buddha images and spirit houses, miniature temples
erected to ward off bad spirits found in gardens and on the
roadside at scenes of fatal accidents.
Beckham was then rushed away to the Aleenta Resort in
nearby Pran Buri district to shoot a television advertisement in a
car which carried the number 7777, after his shirt at Manchester
United.
Beckham has such a large following in Thailand that one
local temple even built a statuette of him on its ground.
One group of excited Bangkok students drove from Bangkok in
the early hours of the morning in the hopes of catching
Beckham on his way to the resort.
They were rewarded with a chance to meet their idol up close when he
stopped at the shrine shop.
"When he looking me and my friend, he said 'hi' and waved
for me, and we go "aaah" and I say to him 'can you take a
photo with me', and David Beckham 'Yes, yes, come on' but I'm not
sure because policeman 'no, cannot' but David Beckham come to
me again 'come'. Oh, it's very good for me", said 23 Public
relations student Parichat Jaijong (Pron: parry-chat
jey-jong).
Beckham last week agreed a move from Manchester United to
Real Madrid for a 25 million pound transfer fee.
Supporter Vilaiporn Roopkom (vee-lai-porn roop-korm) said
she was disppointed, but would still follow both Beckham and
Manchester United.
"I feel so sad when I heard, I don't think it's real, I
think it's a dream. But now he moves, i'm so sad. But, OK, I
will cheer him wherever he moves to, all the teams. But I will
still cheer Manchester United anyway", she said.
The Beckham's will leave for Malaysia and Vietnam on
Tuesday before returning to Bangkok on Wednesday.
David is then expected to join his new club, who beat
Athletico Bilbao 3-1 on Sunday to win their 29th league
title.
