- Story Text: The British Foreign Office Minister of State, Mr. David Ennals, left Lusaka in Zambia on Saturday (6 December) after two days of talks with Rhodesian Nationalist Leader, Joshua Nkomo on the problems of Southern Africa.
During the visit Mr. Ennals also met with Zambian President, Kenneth kaunda, the United Nations commissioner for Namibia (South West Africa) Mr. Sean Macbride, and a delegation of the Namibian Liberation Movement -- Swapo (the South West Africa Peoples Organisation) led by Mr. Mishek Nyongo.
Mr. Nkomo, who leads one faction of Rhodesia's African National Council is due to meet Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith this week to draw up the agenda for a Rhodesian constitutional conference.
Well informed sources said Mr. Ennals had told Mr. Nkomo there was no possibility of British military intervention should the constitutional talks break down and large scale guerrilla war begin.
Before flying out from Lusaka Mr. Ennals told reporters that he believed the talks between Mr. Nkomo and Mr. Smith could well represent the last chance for a peaceful solution in Rhodesia.
SYNOPSIS: The British Foreign Office Minister of State, David Ennals, was in the Zambian capital of Lusaka last week for important talks with Rhodesian Nationalist leader, Joshua Nkomo, and other leaders.
Mr. Nkomo is to meet Rhodesian Prime Minister, Ian Smith, this week to draw up an agenda for a Rhodesian constitutional conference, and it is understood that the talks between Mr. Ennals and Mr. Nkomo touched on the coming meeting between the two leaders.
During their discussions Mr. Ennals is understood to have told Mr. Nkomo that there was no possibility of British military intervention should the constitutional talks break down and large scale guerrilla war begin in Southern Africa.
Mr. Ennals said the talks between Mr. Smith and Mr. Nkomo could be the last chance for a peaceful solution in Rhodesia.
