- Summary: Mexican President unveils plans to support returning migrants SHOTLIST: MEXICO CITY, MEXICO (JAN. 22, 2025) (ANADOLU-ACCESS ALL) 1. PRESS CONFERENCE ROOM WITH MEXICAN PRESIDENT CLAUDIA SHEINBAUM AND CORRESPONDENTS 2. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) MEXICAN PRESIDENT CLAUDIA SHEINBAUM SAYING: "Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente and Secretary of State Rubio have already started talks. It was a very good conversation, very cordial, they talked about migration issues, security issues and as of yesterday these conversations are already starting, which is very important for everyone to know. Also inform them that the attention centers at the border are already being installed. Yesterday, Secretary Marat was there and today I have asked the Welfare secretary to go and supervise. There was even less reception from Mexicans yesterday than in previous days. So, so that, as I said yesterday, we can all put it in its place, we are going to support our brothers and sisters to come back. Mexico embraces you, it's the program and here in Mexico you will always be welcomed with open arms and Mexico is also living a stellar moment. Of course we disagree and to protect our nationals there are the consulates, which the chancellor is dedicated practically most of the time now to be coordinated with the consuls and a team also to see the issue of telephone attention, all of them, for legal support and in case they are deported or in case they want to return voluntarily, because this support we are going to give them. And the care centers are being set up right now." SCRIPT Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Wednesday that talks have commenced between Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente and U.S. Secretary of State Rubio, focusing on migration and security. "It was a very good and cordial conversation," Sheinbaum stated during a press conference in Mexico city. "These conversations officially began yesterday, and it is very important for everyone to know this." Sheinbaum also provided updates on the establishment of care centers at the border to assist returning Mexican nationals. "The attention centers at the border are already being installed. Yesterday, Secretary Marat was there, and today I have asked the Welfare Secretary to go and supervise," she said. She noted that the number of Mexicans arriving at the border had decreased compared to previous days. Addressing the government's support for returning citizens, Sheinbaum said: "We are going to support our brothers and sisters to come back. 'Mexico embraces you' is the program, and here in Mexico, you will always be welcomed with open arms." The president highlighted the ongoing efforts of Mexican consulates to assist nationals abroad. "To protect our citizens, the consulates are fully operational. The foreign minister is dedicating most of his time to coordinating with consuls and a team that handles phone support, legal assistance, and aid for those deported or returning voluntarily," she explained. Trump signed decrees to secure the immediate expatriation of undocumented immigrants by reinstating the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), commonly known as the "Remain in Mexico" policy and declared a national emergency at the US southern border, after his inauguration on Monday. Mexican Interior Minister Rosa Icela Rodriguez unveiled the "Mexico Embraces You" plan, a strategy designed to help and allocate ousted Mexicans. The plan is set in both countries as Mexico has worked on a "consular" network of all 53 seats across the US and has hired more than 2,600 lawyers to assist Mexicans with immigration laws and human rights. Mexico also launched a mobile phone app so Mexicans can request immediate assistance. In Mexico, all expatriated nationals can access a monetary relief fund for 2,000 pesos ($100) and access Mexico's public health care plan. In the near future, the government will also work toward helping expatriates get employment.
