- Story Text: Hundreds of Mexican musicians known as Mariachis congregated Wednesday (November 22) to pay tribute to the patron saint of music, Saint Cecilia.
The mariachis, dressed in their traditional "charro" outfits, gathered at the Plaza Garibaldi in Mexico City to honour the saint.
The large group of troubadors began their day by playing the traditional "mananitas"in the plaza before moving on in a procession through Mexico City.
"This is an offering to our patron saint and our musicians so that our Mexican musical traditions are not lost," said one of the mariachis as he struggled under the weight of a large statue of Saint Cecilia making its way through the city.
Although the precise birthplace of Mariachi is not known, it is believed to have originated in Jalisco in western Mexico sometime in the 1850's. Since then, this traditional Mexican music has become a recognizable symbol of Mexico throughout the world. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
