- Story Text: Lesley Turner of Australia won the women's Italian tennis championships for the first time yesterday (Tuesday) by defeating Maria Bueno of Brazil 6-3, 6-3 in their match in Rome. Later, Miss Turner returned to the court to partner Rosemarie Casals of the United States in defeating Italy's Lea Perico and Silvana Lazzarino 7-5, 7-5 in the women's doubles championship.
Miss Turner played some brilliant tennis against Miss Bueno, giving her opponent little chance to win the Italian title for a record fourth time. The Australians' placements were hit with pinpoint accuracy and her cross-court vollies proved repeated winners. Each girl had broken the other's service twice before Miss Turner gained her winning break-through.
The match was played on an outside court, because rain had disrupted the centre-court programme. There was only a small crowd. Miss Bueno began to play better in the second set, scoring well with well-directed vollies, but her attempts to shake Miss Turner out of her rhythmic stroking with drop shots failed.
At one-all in the second set, there was a run of five games against service before Miss Turner held her delivery for a 5-3 lead. She then broke Miss Bueno's service again with a series of brilliant forehand shots and went on to clinch the season's first major European title.
