- Story Text: A member of the United Nations' military observer team in Georgia was shot dead outside her home in the capital Tbilisi late on Tuesday.
Maria-Magdalena Kawojska, a 31-year-old Pole who began working for the head of the U.N.observer mission in Tbilisi three weeks ago, was found dead outside her apartment on Wednesday (July 15) morning.
Georgia's chief prosecutor had launched an investigation to find out further details about the incident. The U.N.
mission declined to comment on the shooting.
"We have to work on every version.More likely it was a non-political killing," said Gigla Abulashvili, a senior investigator from the Georgian Prosecutor's Office.
Ninety unarmed U.N.military observers are based in Georgia, where they are helping a 1,500-strong Russian contingent to keep the peace between the former Soviet republic and its breakaway region of Abkhazia.
