- Story Text: Officials and citizens of the Peruvian town of Nazca on Thursday (May 17) paid tribute to archaeologist Dr. Maria Reiche Newman on her ninety-second birthday.
Newman spent 50 years of her life studying enigmatic ancient lines forming designs which were carved in the 350-km (200-mile) range of the Nazca desert by people of the Nazca culture which thrived between 200 B.C. and 600 A.D..
On Thursday, a large parade wound its way through the city of Nazca to mark Newman's birthday.
During the birthday celebrations, the president of the Maria Reich Association in Defence of the Nazca Lines Ana Maria Cogorno said it was difficult for others to continue Newman's work.
Newman arrived in Nazca in 1939 as a translator. Since then she has tried to decipher the mysterious designs, which the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) named as a cultural historical landmark in 1994.
Newman has said that she wants her work to be a message to all generations and to be used as an instrument to end all injustices against culture and history.
Newman's doctor said she was healthy for her age.
