- Story Text: RUSSIAN REACTIONS TO MARIA SHARAPOVA'S WIMBLEDON WIN.
Russian fans delighted in Maria Sharapova's 6-1 6-4 win over Serena
Williams in the Wimbeldon women's final on Saturday (July 3).
Sharapova is the first Russian to win the prestigious tennis tournament.
Her victory comes as a group of talented Russian women players is takng the
sport by storm.
In last month's French Open, Russian Anastasia Myskina topped her
compatriot Elena Dementieva to take the top honours. The all-Russian finals
turned Russia into a nation of tennis fans, if only for a short time. But
today's triumph indicates the Russian women are set to upset the tennis world
and are likely to create millions of new fans.
In Moscow on Saturday, one fan, Oleg, said, "She's only 17 and very
talented, she's probably our rising star. I think she's taken Kournikova's
place."
Another fan, Dmitry, said, "I think this is good. People have been saying that
there would be a big tennis boom soon, and here we have two grand slams. But,
it makes you feel even more embarassed for the men."
