- Story Text: Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar met with
Mexican President Vincente Fox on Tuesday during
his three day visit to Mexico.
Mexican President Vincente Fox formally received Spanish
Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar Monday (July 2) in a ceremony
at the presidential palace during a three-day visit to Mexico City.
"Among the emerging countries, we are a nation that looks
forward to moving beyond what has happened in the past
through the successful reconciliation within the region and in
the world, "said President Fox in a speech given the same day
he tied the knot with his spokeswoman Martha Sahagun.
"Today it's been a year of great historic change in Mexico.
And today coincides with the birthday of the president of the
republic, so Happy Birthday. Congratulations for the electoral
success and your birthday. Another coincidence, today, the
president of the republic married this morning. So, triple
congratulations. And furthermore, it is very good to get
married early in the morning, so you have the rest of the day
to get to work," said Prime Minister Aznar.
Aznar arrived in Mexico City Monday (July 1) and was scheduled
to meet with Mexico City Mayor Manuel Lopez Obrador on
Tuesday, as well.
In a news release, the Spanish Embassy said in addition to Fox
and Obrador, Aznar will be meeting with leading
intellectuals, business leaders and the leader of Mexico's
former ruling party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party
(PRI). On Wednesday he will visit the northern industrial city
of Monterrey and meet the governor there.
"As I said before, with the many ties that we have from our
pasts, what most importantly binds us together is our future,
and naturally, the many possibilities to work together with
common objectives and goals," Aznar said.
