- Story Text: Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar has arrived in
Mexico for talks on the Iraq conflict.
A small group of anti-Iraq war protesters angrily
protested outside the Spanish embassy in Mexico City on
Thursday (February 20) before Aznar's arrival.
President Vicente Fox of Mexico, a Security Council
member, is resisting Spanish and U.S. efforts to bring him
into the pro-war camp in the Iraq crisis.
Aznar, one of Europe's most pro-U.S. leaders in the Iraq
conflict, is scheduled to meet with U.S. President George W.
Bush at his Texas ranch on Friday (February 21).
The government of Fox, a former Coca-Cola executive once
politically close to Bush, has shied away from his friendship
with the United States in recent months.
Mexico is bitter about the failure to reach a deal with
the Bush administration on formalizing the status of Mexican
illegal immigrants to the United States.
And analysts say Fox can ill afford to upset nationalist
sensitivities ahead of mid-term elections in July by being too
close to the United States.
Mexico says it wants to see Iraq disarmed of any weapons
of mass destruction but insists that U.N. arms inspectors be
given more time before any attack is launched.
