- Story Text: President Maria Estela Person swore into office on Thursday (15 January) two new ministers after dismissing four Cabinet members earlier in the day. The four were dismissed after the President had demanded the resignation of her eight-man Cabinet to reshuffle her team and strengthen her authority.
In the new appointments, the former Economics Minister, Roberto Ares, replaced Angel Robledo, in the key post of Minister of the Interior, and the former Attorney General, Juan Carlos Deheza, became the Minister of Justice, replacing Ernesto Corvalan Nanclares.
Mrs. Peron did not name a replacement for Senor Manual Arauz Castex, the former Foreign Affairs Minister. But the portfolio is to be held for the time being by Senor Deheza, the new Minister of Justice.
The fourth minister to be dismissed was Senor Tomas Vottero, the Defence Minister. His replacement still has to be names.
The dismissal of the four ministers is regarded as an attempt by the President to strengthen her position in the face of a power struggle within the Peronist movement. The sacking of the Foreign minister, Senor Arauz Castex, surprised observers in Boenos Aires, especially since his popularity has risen over his decision last Tuesday to demand that Britain recall its Ambassador in connection with the dispute over the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands.
SYNOPSIS: In the Argentine capital, Boenos Aires, on Thursday, President Maria Estela Peron swore into office two new minsters, after she had dismissed four members of her Cabinet. The first new minister to take the oath was the former Economics Minister, Senor Roberto Ares, who replaced Senor Angel Robledo. as Minister of the Interior.
Although Senor Robledo had been Chairman of the Judicialist Movement, he had quarrelled with the powerful leaders of the labour movement, who are among Senora Peron's strongest supporters. He had refused union demands that two rebellious provincial governors be dismissed.
The other new minister to be sworn in was Senor Juan Carlos Deheza, the former Attorney General, who became the Minister of Justice. He replaced Senor Ernesto Corvelan Nanclares. The other two minsters who were dismissed were the Foreign Minister, Senor Manuel Arazu Castex, and the Defence Minister, Senor Tomas Vottero.
Mrs. Peron did not name a successor for the Foreign Affairs post, but it was made known that Senor Deheza will be responsible for the portfolio for the time being. The sacking of the four ministers in regarded as an attempt by President Peron to strengthen her position in the face of a power struggle within the Peronist movement.
