- Story Text: Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar has visited El
Salvador to meet with Central American heads of state.
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar arrived in El
Salvador on Wednesday (July 9) to set the stage for a future
free trade accord between Central America and the European
Union (EU), show his support for regional development and
solidify an accord to combat terrorism, narcotrafficking and
organised crime.
Aznar encouraged the Central American leaders to sign a
political accord by the end of 2003 which he says can serve to
negotiate with the EU. The prime minister committed to
advocating for the Central Americans in May of 2004 in Mexico
during a summit between the EU, Latin America and the
Caribbean.
"I think we're preparing decisive changes in the sphere of
relations between our countries, changes that are, without a
doubt, responses to the threats, to the challenges that we
face and that stimulate economic and social transformations in
each of our countries," said Aznar.
"Central America has not avoided the challenges that the
current situation of international economic globalisation has
raised. To the contrary. With its sights on the international
opportunities, it is knowing how to respond to this order.
Fragmented markets must be overcome and, for that,
international relations is creating a united market similar in
population to Spain."
The leaders also announced an agreement to have troops
from El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua join Spaniards in
rebuilding Iraq.
Also on the agenda for Wednesday and Thursday are
discussons over joint crime-fighting, Spanish investment in
the region and the promotion of Central America as a tourist
destination in Europe.
The summit is being hosted in El Salvador, the major
recipient of Spanish aid. The heads of state who attended were
Guatemalan President Alfonso Portillo, Honduran President
Ricardo Maduro, Nicaraguan President Enrique Bolanos, Costa
Rican President Abel Pacheco and Panamanian President Mireya
Moscoso and the Prime Minister of Belize, Said W. Musa.
