Barber shops in the country re-opened on Monday (May 4) after almost a seven-week compulsory closure as part of coronavirus containment measures. The barbers have to comply with strict health rules. Many have to accept fewer customers, and reduce the number of chairs because of a required minimum separation distance of 1.5 metres. Customers must have their hair washed to kill off possible viruses so barbers have to set aside more time with each client. Hafize Akyuz, a barber shop owner in Berlin said the coronavirus restrictions were correct. "They hurt many people. But we are very glad that these places have re-opened," she said. Barber Gokmen Akguner said they received intense interest from clients. “We are receiving lots of phone calls. Now, there are 3-4 customers waiting outside. I think we will work full-time today,” he said. Germans be required to continue to maintain physical distance from each other and wear face masks in supermarkets, pharmacies, shops and when using public transport. A ban on gatherings of more than two people in public areas will be in force. Cultural venues, bars, leisure centers, and beauty salons will also remain closed for the time being, while large-scale public events such as concerts and football matches have been banned until 31 August. Some schools will gradually reopen after May 4, beginning with senior students and those close to graduation. The country imposed strict lockdown measures on March 22, ordering all non-essential shops to close, canceling festivals and sports events, and banning any social contact among more than two people in public. On April 15 Chancellor Angela Merkel said most of the restrictions on public life will be extended at least until May 3, with relaxations for small shops and stores with less than 800 square meters, but restaurants and cafes will remain closed until further notice. So far Germany has reported 165,664 COVID-19 cases and 6,866 deaths, according to the data compiled by John Hopkins University. Writing by Sibel Uygun
