WIDE SHOT OF POLICE OFFICERS AND VEHICLES IN FRONT OF FOREIGN MINISTRY BUILDING BERLIN, GERMANY (SEPTEMBER 1, 2020) (AAVN-ACCESS ALL) SCRIPT: Several hundred people including members of the Chinese Uighur minority in Berlin staged a protest outside the foreign ministry in the German capital on Tuesday (September 1) ahead of a visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Waving the blue and white flag of the Uighurs the protesters said they were against pressure, persecution, and massacres by China in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The demonstrators held banners reading “Stand up for human rights”, “Free Uyghur”. China is accused of locking up hundreds of thousands of Muslims without trial in its western region of Xinjiang. But the government denies the claims saying re-education camps have been established for the "educational transformation of people who have been influenced by extremism". In May 2014, China launched its “Strike Hard Campaign against Violent Terrorism” in Xinjiang. Since then, over 1 million were formally arrested. Many refer to China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region as East Turkestan. China’s Xinjiang region is home to around 10 million Uighurs. The Turkic Muslim group, which makes up around 45 percent of Xinjiang’s population, has long accused China’s authorities of cultural, religious, and economic discrimination. China stepped up its restrictions on the region in the past two years, banning men from growing beards and women from wearing veils and introducing what many experts see as the world’s most extensive electronic surveillance program, according to The Wall Street Journal. More than 1 million people, or about 7 percent of the Muslim population in Xinjiang, have been incarcerated in an expanding network of “political re-education” camps, according to U.S. officials and UN experts.
