- Story Text: The United States team of Johnny Miller and Lou Graham stormed though their final rounds to give America its 13th World Cup gold tournament victory in Bangkok, thailand, on Sunday (7 December).
With only a two stork margin between the U.S. and Taiwan and Australia, who held joint second place before the final round, the American pair surged away to win by ten strokes.
Taiwan, who failed to make their expected charge, finished in second place with the Japanese team coming through from sixth position to grab third place.
The Australians finished another stroke away in fourth place.
The mercurial Miller was the mainstay of the U.S. team. He had rounds of 66, 71, 70 and 68 on the 6906 yard (6316 mere) par 72 Navatene course, despite the hot and humid conditions.
The Australian effort collapsed despite a fine fourth 69 by Bob Shearer. His team mate Ian Stanley went through the horrors and carded a 7-over par 79.
Johnny Miller also took the individual honours with his 13-under par four round tally.
SYNOPSIS: Murakami plays his iron shot off the eighteenth tee .. final hole in the World Cup gold government in Bangkok .. on Monday. Murakami and his partner Shimada gave the Japanese third place in the tournament with fine, late charge. They came though with fourth and final rounds of sixty-nine and sixty-eight respectively, to cut the Australian team out of third place by a single stroke. After the third round had been completed, the Japanese pair were languishing in sixth place and well out of contention. But their determination and some great golf put them back into the running.
The Australian pair collapsed. Despite an excellent final round of sixty-eight by Bob Shearer, they were to finish fourth .. after being second, just two strokes off the lead before the fourth round. Ian Stanley had a disastrous final round of seventy-nine .. missing many simple putts. The heat and humidity affected Stanley's golf, and with his last round demise went the Australian challenge.
The honours eventually went to the United States team of Johnny Miller and Lou Graham .. as expected, Graham, the U.S. Open Champion, switched to a larger ball during the last rounds and it transformed his game.
The American went into the final round with a narrow two stroke lead, but by the time they finished, it had been increased to overall winning margin of ten strokes. Miller also took the individual honours. His four round total of two-hundred-and-seventy-five was thirteen under par.
It is the thirteenth time that a U.S. team has taken team honours in the World Cup.
