The 10-year-old Melek Tatmaz, having high body temperature, was diagnosed with COVID-19 a month ago and taken under treatment at a hospital in Istanbul. But the infection led to multiple organ failure, heart, and lung failure. Although her tiny heart stopped beating for about 5 minutes in this process, the teen girl was brought back with the intervention of the health personnel in the Martyr Prof. Dr. İlhan Varank Sancaktepe Training and Research Hospital. Chief Physician, Nurettin Yiyit said Melek’s heart and lungs were severely affected after COVID-19. “We continue her treatment in intensive care with a respirator, but we remained incapable and connected the patient to a device that replaces the heart and lungs we call ECMO," said Dr. Yiyit. The little girl started to recover after she was connected to ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation). Tatmaz was removed from ECMO, showed a significant improvement in heart rate with the treatment. After a while, she no longer needed a respirator and started breathing on her own. Melek’s mother Meryem Tatmaz warned parents saying “They should be very careful. They should not say 'The disease will not be transmitted to me, the disease will not be passed on to my child…” On Monday (Oct. 26) Melek celebrated her birthday as well as second life with health care staff who helped her in life and death struggle. She happily received her birthday gifts and gave her doctors cake with her own hands. Melek is looking forward to seeing the days of her discharge from the hospital.
