The Christmas ceremony was held at the Serbian Saint Sava Church in the country's capital Belgrade where Eastern Orthodox Christianity predominates throughout most of the country. For Orthodox Christians in Serbia who follow the Julian calendar, Christmas is one of the holiest days of the year. Traditionally, families share a meal on Christmas eve to mark the last day of fasting after 40 days to prepare for the birth of Christ. The Orthodox Church in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, also celebrates Christmas Day. Orthodox people living in the country attended the Christmas mass. While most Christians around the world celebrate Christmas on Dec.25, many Orthodox Christians celebrate it on or near Jan.7 to mark Jesus Christ’s birth, according to the Julian calendar.
