In the archaeological site of Harran district of Sanliurfa, one of the oldest settlements in the world, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, the remains of one of world's oldest universities have been brought to light. During the eight years of archaeological excavations with the support of the Turkish government, the remains of the science center of its era mentioned in history books and notes of voyagers have been unearthed. Mehmet Onal, archeology lecturer at Harran University and Head of Excavation Site, said they reached the madrasah (university) through a monumental gate. "We knew that Harran was named a science center in the history. There were over 300 scientists here," he said. On the archaeological efforts in the region, he said: "For the first time (during the excavation effort here), we see a university structure. Now, the remains have been coming to light. Its monumental remains can now be seen." Cihat Koc, Harran District Governor, said the history of education and scientific education in Harran dates back to 3000 BC. "Harran is a place that pioneered the world with science, scientific education and civilization. Therefore, when we look at it historically, it is one of the most important places in the world. We are talking about the world's first university, a place where the world's most important scientists of the time were educated," he said.
