- Story Text: United States' Senator George McGovern discussed the Middle East situation with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin on Thursday (3 April) in Jerusalem.
Senator McGovern -- who was on a tour of the region -- described the talks as "very satisfying and useful". They met for about 90 minutes, but no details of their meeting were disclosed.
He later told a news conference that the United States was permanently committed to Israel's independence, but he saw the co-operation of Arab states as essential for Middle East peace and American well-being.
Senator McGovern said the Palestinians' situation is unsatisfactory and they were entitled to an independent national homeland of their own.
He added that Mr. Yassir Arafat, leader of the Palestine Liberation Organisation -- whom he met recently -- was told that guerrilla activities did not help the Palestinian cause.
