This particular Alerce is 2,600 years old, it´s alive, it´s green, it´s growing. And inside the park, we also have other trees that reach up to 4,000 years old. So today, the Alerce is considered the second longest living species on earth.” CHUBUT, ARGENTINA (RECENT, NOV. 2021) (AAVN - ACCESS ALL) SCRIPT One of the largest and oldest trees in the world, "El Alerce Abuelo" in Argentina is approximately 2,600 years old. Located at the Los Alerces National Park in the Andes in Chubut province, El Alerce Abuelo is among the longest-living population of Alerce trees (Fitzroya cupressoides), a conifer endemic to South America. The tree is nearly 60 meters tall and 3 meters dbh (the diameter of the trunk). "This particular Alerce is 2,600 years old, it's alive, it's green, it's growing," said Alicia Elicabe , a tourist guide from Los Alerces National Park. "And inside the park, we also have other trees that reach up to 4,000 years old." The Los Alerces National Park, which is the natural habitat for a number of endemic and threatened species of flora and fauna including Alerce trees, was declared a World Heritage site by the UNESCO in 2017, she also added. The park retains a high degree of naturalness also providing a profound visitor experience. El Alerce Abuelo is today considered the second longest living species on earth after the unnamed Pinus longaeva tree in Californian mountains that is over 5,000 year old.
