- Story Text: Senegal's Iddrises Konatey stopped Ghana's "King" George Aidoo in the twelfth round of their scheduled fifteen round fight to win the African middleweight championship in Accra on Saturday (7 February).
Aidoo's handlers had to help him back to his corner after Togolese referee Simon De Fant stopped the fight to save him from further "unnecessary punishment".
Konatey, based in France, absorbed early punishment to be behind on points until the end of the ninth round.
Then his punching power began to tell on the United States-based Ghanaian National Champion.
By the twelfth, Aidoo has been reduced to punching bag status, and after he had taken the mandatory eight count for the second time in the round, his seconds threw in the towel.
The victory was Konatey's eighth win from his only eight bouts since turning professional a year ago. It was by far his most important victory.
