- Story Text: Just hours before he was expected to deliver a final
ultimatum to Saddam Hussein to leave Iraq or face
annihilation, U.S President George W. Bush was spotted taking
a short, contemplative break with his dog on the south lawn
of the White House.
Amid a flurry of political, diplomatic and military
activity around the world, the president looked a lonely
figure as he played fetch on the Whitehouse lawn with his dogs
Barney and Spot.
Reuters Television recorded Bush's contemplative moment
just hours before a scheduled address to the American people
explaining why he thought war with Iraq was necessary.
In his address on Monday (March 170 Bush was expected to
give Saddam a brief window, perhaps 48 or 72 hours, to depart
Iraq before the shooting started.
Assuming Saddam stands firm as he has vowed to do, the
attack could begin within hours of the U.N. inspectors leaving
Iraq. They have been told to leave Iraq within twenty four
hours.
Opinion polls in the United States showed Bush, who is
betting his presidency on the war, has solid support from U.S.
voters.
