I am studying at Vidya Vikas School.” AAVN SCRIPT: A seven-year-old girl from India’s Kerala on Sunday (Jan. 8) set a new record for swimming four km across the Vembanad Lake in Kerala, the longest lake in the country. Jewel Mariam Basil, living in Thavanakkadavu near Cherthala of Alappuzha District of in Kerala is at Vidya Vikas School in Karukadam. She became the youngest to swim the distance of four kilometers within 1 hour and 53 minutes. Flanked by two boats and coast guard officers, Jewel Mariam started to swim at 8.10 am and reached the “Kolathum Kadavu “ near Vaikom of Kottayam district of Kerala, at 10:03 am. A large number of people witnessed her heroic effort and crossed the backwaters. The young swimmer’s coach Biju Thankappan said Jewel Mariam has undergone intensive training. “Initial days the training was two hours in the morning and one and half hours in the evening, later it increased to continuous three hours morning and evening,” added the coach. Influenced by her father the Jewel Mariam started swimming, practicing in a pool near her home Kothamangalam when she was three years old. Her father Basil Varghese said the girl always had a passion for swimming. “We haven’t tried for an attempt a record. It was only training in swimming. Later the coach gave confidence to us to turn it into an attempt to set a record,” said the father. Earlier a nine-year-old girl Alka Cyriac swam the backwaters in 2001.
