Kano is home to some of the oldest tanneries in the country, some spanning generations. Anadolu Agency Video News (AAVN) videoed traditional tanneries which are Nigeria’s oldest and also the biggest suppliers of local leather. Aside from the usual cow and goat skin, they also specialize in a range of exotic skins like snake, crocodile, elephant and tiger. Shoes, clothes, bags, wallets, belts and furniture are produced from leather from Kano tanneries and sent to many parts of the world. While these tanneries contribute to the country’s economy through exports, they also provide a job for many citizens. Nigeria’s tanning sector attracted over $645m in the last quarter of 2021 alone. A study carried out by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) projected that the Nigerian Leather Industry has the potential to generate over 1 billion dollars by 2025.
