He was arrested by Israeli forces in 1983 and was sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of killing an Israeli soldier. His penalty was lowered to 40 years in 2012 by the then Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres. Since his release, thousands of Palestinians flocked to Younis’ house to shake hands with him. Dozens of Palestinians including his family gathered outside his house in Ara town of Umm Al-Fahm city and celebrated the freedom of the 66-year-old Palestinian man. Younis, the longest-serving Palestinian prisoner in Israeli jails, was imprisoned, when he was 26 years old. He was charged with being a member of the then-banned Fatah movement, “possession of weapons" and "killing an Israeli soldier." On Jan. 5, his cousin Karim Younis was also released after serving his 40-year term.
