- Story Text: The three-year trial in Thailand of a British couple accused of drug trafficking ended on Tuesday (January 30) with sentencing expected to be handed down late next month.
The trial of Sandra Gregory and Robert Lock began in early Febuary, 1993. The two were arrested at Bangkok international airport after a customs official found 102 grams (3.6 ounces) of heroin hidden on Gregory.
Gregory pleaded guilty and told the court that Lock promised to pay her for carrying the drug to Japan.
Lock denied the charge and has been fighting the case in court.
But the trial was repeatedly adjourned, dragging on for years as witnesses failed to appear in court.
On Tuesday, the court said sentencing would take place on February 29 after the defence's last witness, who previously had refused to testify, agreed to appear in court.
Lock's attorney Putri Kuwanond said the British government sent a letter to Thailand to try to speed up the case after the Gregory's mother complained that it had been delayed too long.
Heroin trafficking carries the death penalty in Thailand though the sentence is invariably commuted to a lengthy prison term.
