- Story Text: China’s citizens said on Tuesday (January 28) they felt “very proud” of Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek which has garnered attention worldwide since its emergence last week.
“Because as a Chinese citizen, we have this (AI) research and development that has become a global sensation,” said 24-year-old student Leo Li, adding that he felt “especially proud” of the firm’s free AI assistant.
It was a sentiment shared by 38-year-old Chen Jianuo.
“It has gained popularity abroad which I feel quite proud of. I also feel that China has made great progress in the development of artificial intelligence, and I hope that the technological development of our country will get better,” said Chen, who works at a magazine.
Global technology shares recovered some poise on Tuesday, but remained vulnerable after a rout sparked by the emergence of DeepSeek’s artificial intelligence model made investors question the sky-high valuation and dominance of AI bellwethers.
The Hangzhou startup behind DeepSeek launched the free AI assistant last week, saying that it uses less data at a fraction of the cost of services available currently. That garnered attention worldwide, although scepticism lingers.
The launch and increasing popularity of DeepSeek spurred investors to dump tech stocks globally, with ripples felt from Tokyo to Amsterdam to Silicon Valley.
Nvidia shares sank 17% on Monday (January 27), wiping $593 billion from its market value, a record one-day loss for any company.
