- Story Text: Protesters rallied in Mexico City on Wednesday (January 29) against a gas project in the Gulf of California, saying it could endanger whales.
The project, run by Saguaro Energia, aims to export liquefied natural gas from Sonora, a northwestern Mexican state, to Asia via the gulf using deep-sea vessels.
“The main cause of death for whales is collisions with large vessels,” coordinator at NGO Conexiones Climaticas Pablo Montano said.
The Gulf of California houses 900 different species of fish and 39% of all of the world’s sea mammals, including the humpback, gray and blue whales, according to the Mexican government.
Environmentalist group Greenpeace stated that the project serves the interests of the U.S. fossil gas industry, seeking to gain access to Asian markets.
