- Story Text: New York Fashion Week will return with old time favorites and newcomers continuing to pave a way into the industry from February 6 through February 11.
Legacy brand Calvin Klein Collection will show for the first time in six-and-a-half-years under new creative director Veronica Leoni, while digital currency is affording more awareness for new brands like Luar and Collina Strada.
“There are a lot of just smaller, more localized brands that have really expanded their customer base and their reach through the use of digital media today, as well as social media,” said fashion news editor at The Daily Front Row, Aaron Royce.
He further commented on the evolution of fashion week due to the rise of shocking moments for digital and social media, which he says has helped maintain its relevance.
“I think also there is a lot more of an expectation that fashion week will be full of a lot of surprises and viral moments, whether that's somebody sitting in a front row or a collection that has a particularly viral look or moment taking place on the runway,”
Royce also emphasized how platforms like TikTok have democratized access to fashion week and how users like Caroline Vazzana and Janette Ok make a living creating content during the event.
“I think that really broke open the doors in terms of getting a younger audience involved in fashion week that might not have been as fashion-focused or was even creating content that was necessarily fashion-focused. But social media has really opened the doors for more people to access the industry and do their own homework on the industry.”
One major change is the elimination of a centralized location for shows.
“There is a very wide range of places where shows are going to be taking place. And I think that used to be a little more novelty a handful of years ago, and now it's become the norm,” explained Royce.
And while the landscape may have changed, the main idea behind Fashion Week remains the same as nearly 60 designers prepare to show their new collections.
“The purpose of fashion week has always been to preview the upcoming season’s collections from a range of designers to various press and buyers and influencers within the industry, whether that’s celebrities, content creators, magazine editors, digital editors, etc.,” said Royce.
Other highlights include the NYFW: Backstage experience that will feature TRESemmé’s Style Studios, pop-up shops from designers, and a series of NYFW: The Talks.
Designers Zankov and Kim Shui will have pop-up shops in the experience space, and a portion of the proceeds from all purchases will be donated to support California’s Wildfire Relief Efforts. And WME Fashion will also be supporting the Black Beauty Roster’s “Hair Is Fashion” exhibit at the Chelsea Walls Art Gallery in celebration of NYFW.
