- Story Text: U.S. marines stretched out barbed wire across a border fence separating the United States and Mexico on Thursday (February 6).
On Thursday, a crew of about 30 marines placed barbed wire on the U.S. side of a wall that borders the La Libertad neighborhood in Tijuana.
In this region, the border is marked by two walls built with steel columns, and the barbed wire was placed on the wall closest to Mexican territory.
Meanwhile, at the San Ysidro border crossing, where thousands of vehicles cross daily from Tijuana into the United States, Mexican National Guard members were deployed to monitor the movement of vehicles and to set up checkpoints for cars heading towards the neighboring country.
President Donald Trump threatened Mexico with 25% tariffs, but pushed the roll-out back a month on Monday (February 3) in exchange for promises to tackle drugs and immigration. Mexico agreed to deploy 10,000 National Guard troops to the border.
