- Story Text: Hundreds of lanterns floated into the night skies of northern Taiwan on Saturday (February 8) as crowds prayed for prosperity in the Year of Snake.
The spectacular light show draws hundreds of participants from Taiwan and all over the world to the mountainous Pingxi district every year on the cusp of spring.
Participants write down their hopes for the New Year ranging from good health to wealth and world peace before releasing the lanterns into the air.
The sky lantern festival, one of the island's top tourist draws, began in 1999 in New Taipei and is held to mark the end of the Lunar New Year celebrations.
