The Maha Kumbh Mela, which takes place every 12 years and is recognized as the world's largest religious festival, has seen over 500 million people gather to bathe in the river, which is considered "holy water" by Hindus. The festival is celebrated with deep religious significance, as millions participate in purification rituals in the Ganges. Hindus believe that bathing in the Ganges during the Maha Kumbh Mela helps cleanse them of sins and offers a chance to break free from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. The festival is seen as an opportunity for spiritual renewal and redemption. The Maha Kumbh Mela holds the title of the world's largest religious gathering. In 2001, a world record was set when 60 million people entered the Ganges River on the same day in Allahabad. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of Hindus participated in the festival in 2021, bathing in the Triveni Sangam River, a confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Sarasvati rivers.
