  • Story Text: Tourists braved searing temperatures and flocked to China's scenic Flaming Mountains, state media reported on Wednesday (June 12), as parts of the country baked in record highs heat.
    CCTV aired footage of tourists sporting broad-brimmed hats and umbrellas taking selfies by a 12-metre-tall (39 feet) thermometer that displayed a real-time surface temperature of 75 degrees Celsius (167 degrees Fahrenheit), while the air temperature measured 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
    In spite of the heat, an endless stream of visitors continued to gather at the Flaming Mountains on the northern rim of the Turpan Depression in Xinjiang to tour the site, the CCTV report said.
    Temperatures are hitting record highs in parts of north and central China this week while a severe drought in the east is also threatening crops, as countries across Asia brace themselves for another summer of extreme weather.
