- Story Text:Colourful, bright northern lights sparked by solar flares over the weekend were seen illuminating the night sky in northern China, state broadcast CCTV reported.
Footage aired on CCTV showed the dazzling light show mesmerising onlookers in Xinjiang's Altay prefecture on Sunday (May 12) and in Heilongjiang's Mohe city the night before.
One tourist said he drove all the way to Mohe from Beijing, which is approximately 25 hours on the road, to witness the northern lights.
"It was red with pink colours, and the lights were swaying left to right. It was very nice and stunning," said Ma Jingxuan.
The northern lights, which are also known as aurora borealis, are a natural phenomenon triggered by collisions between the Earth's gaseous atomic molecules and particles released by the Sun's atmosphere.
