- Story Text:Emergency rescue operations were underway after flooding caused by heavy rain overwhelmed parts of southern China’s Nanning city, state media reported on Sunday (May 19).
Footage carried by state broadcaster CCTV showed commuters navigating through flooded streets, as emergency workers on foot and on boats rescued stranded residents including a wheelchair-bound 95-year-old elderly resident who was reported to have had recent heart surgery.
Local authorities warned residents to be vigilant as there is a high risk of further damages brought about by continuous heavy rainfall.
The Nanning Meteorological Observatory warned of heavy flooding in some rivers in northern and eastern parts of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, with water levels rivers expected to rise significantly by 2-8 metres on Monday (May 20), CCTV reported.
Frequent rainfall is expected to continue in the coming days across southern China, CCTV added.
