- Story Text: China’s northernmost city of Mohe has hit its coldest temperature on record, Chinese state media reported on Tuesday (January 24).
According to state broadcaster CCTV, Mohe, which borders Russia to its north, recorded a temperature of around -53 degrees Celsius (-63.4 Fahrenheit) at around 0700 A.M. (2300 GMT January 21) local time on Sunday (January 22), breaking its previous record set in 1969 at -52.3 Celsius (-62.14 Fahrenheit).
A local CCTV correspondent demonstrated how cold Mohe was by cracking an egg outside on a shovel and showing it freeze within seconds on camera.
Mohe is no newcomer to subarctic temperatures and China's coldest temperature on record was set by the city of Genhe in nearby Inner Mongolia region at -58 degrees Celsius ( -72.4 Fahrenheit) in 2009, state media said.
