- Story Text:China marked the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two on Thursday (September 3) with a short ceremony in Beijing attended by the country's top leadership including President Xi Jinping, state media reported.
The ceremony was held at a museum near the Marco Polo Bridge in the western suburbs of the capital. The Marco Polo Bridge incident, in which Chinese and Japanese troops fired shots on July 7, 1937, is attributed to sparking the second Sino-Japanese war.
State broadcaster CCTV showed footage of Xi and other senior leaders paying their respects in front of a war memorial at the museum.
China has since 1946 marked the end of the second world war on September 3, effectively making it the country's version of Victory Day, which much of the rest of the world marks in mid-August. Mid-August is when Japan surrendered, and September 2 is when the surrender document was signed.
