- Story Text: Videos broadcast on Chinese state TV on Wednesday (July 21) showed passengers in a subway car standing in floodwater and water rushing by in the provincial capital of Zhengzhou.
Some 25 people have died in central Henan province, including 12 trapped in a subway, where rains were persisting for a sixth day and spreading north to neighboring Hebei province.
The Chinese government ordered local authorities immediately improve urban transit flood controls and emergency responses on Thursday (July 22).
Hundreds of people were pulled to safety earlier this week from the flooded subway in Zhengzhou, a city of 12 million people about 650 km (400 miles) southwest of Beijing.
Some 617.1 mm (24.3 inches) of rain fell in Zhengzhou from Saturday (July 17) to Tuesday (July 20), almost the equivalent of the city's annual average of 640.8 mm (25.2 inches).
