- Story Text: Rescue workers in southwestern China worked through the night, evacuating the injured on stretchers and pulling survivors out of collapsed buildings toppled by a magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck southwestern Sichuan province in China on the previous day, state TV reported on Tuesday (September 6).
The strong quake killed 46 with 16 people still missing and more than 50 people injured, CCTV reported, citing local authorities. Some roads and homes near the epicenter were damaged by landslides while communications were down in at least one area, state television reported.
Authorities deployed more than 6,500 rescuers to work around- the- clock to conduct search and rescue operations since the quake hit at Monday noon. The epicentre was at Luding, the China Earthquake Networks Centre said, a town in the mountains about 226 km southwest of Sichuan's capital Chengdu.
Earthquakes are common in the southwestern province of Sichuan, especially in its mountains in the west, a tectonically active area along the eastern boundary of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau.
