- Story Text: North Korean leader Kim Jong-il discussed a return to nuclear talks with Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang as the two met in Pyongyang on Monday (October 24).
Kim told Li, the man likely to succeed Wen Jiabao as Premier, that a moribund 2005 deal should be the basis for fresh talks about Pyongyang's nuclear programme, Chinese state media reported, leaving unanswered a key question on uranium enrichment.
The United States and South Korea insist that the North must immediately halt its uranium enrichment programme, which it unveiled last year, as a precursor to restart regional talks that offer economic aid in return for denuclearisation.
Pyongyang says its uranium enrichment programme is designed to produce power.
North Korea walked out of the negotiations, which also involve Russia and Japan, more than two years ago after the United Nations imposed fresh sanctions for a long-range missile test.
Li also met with North Korea's nominal head of state Kim Yong-nam on Monday, the second day of his three-day visit to isolated state.
He has also visited the friendship tower, built to commemorate Chinese soldiers who died in the Korean war.
Li's visit coincides with two-day talks between North Korea and the United States, held in Geneva. The U.S. side said on Monday that some progress were made, although issues still remained.
Throughout the regional turbulence, Beijing has stood by its ally, North Korea, which it sees as a buffer against the influence of the United States and its allies.
But China has also tried to preserve ties with South Korea, and to revive the stalled talks on North Korean nuclear disarmament.
Li will visit South Korea after his trip to the North. - Copyright Holder: CCTV (China) - NO RESALE MAINLAND CHINA
