- Story Text: Floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall ravaged China's southwest Sichuan province, killing at least 15 people and leaving 59 others missing, state media reported on Wednesday (August 18).
The area was hard hit during a massive earthquake in 2008 which killed at least 80,000 people.
State television CCTV showed aerial shots of Qingping village, where six million cubic meters of mud swallowed houses and forced over 5,400 people to flee their homes last week.
Qingping is surrounded by mountains, where the soil had been made unstable after the 2008 earthquake.
The footage was taken on Monday (August 16), but the reporter, who had been trapped in the mountains overnight as the only road linking the village had been cut off, only managed to get it out on Tuesday (August 17).
Over 400,000 people have been evacuated across the province, according to official figures.
A female reporter from a local TV station was swept away by flood water on Sunday (August 15) as she and her crew followed a group of rescuers to pass a makeshift bridge made of bamboo sticks and ropes.
She was brought to safety by rescue workers and local villagers, CCTV reported.
In adjacent Gansu province to the north, thousands of soldiers and rescue workers continued their effort to restore the landslide-devastated county of Zhouqu.
An avalanche of mud roared down the slopes of a mountain late on August 7 after unusually strong rain, killing 1,270 people and hundreds of others still unaccounted for.
More rain is forecast for the two provinces in the coming days, posing a threat of more flooding and landslides, meterological authorities have warned.
At least 1,000 people have died in floods in central, southern and northeast China so far this year. - Copyright Holder: CCTV (China) - NO RESALE MAINLAND CHINA
