- Story Text: Chinese Vice-President and heir-apparent Xi Jinping arrived in North Korea on Tuesday (June 17) as part of a three day visit that seeks to shore up ties between China and North Korea and discuss Pyongyang's nuclear weapons programme.
Xi, who took the post in March, was greeted at Pyongyang airport by his North Korean counterpart Yang Hyong Sop.
Xi's spokesman said the Vice-President would discuss "denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula" with North Korean leaders, but he did not confirm whether those leaders would include Kim Jong-il, the North's reclusive leader.
In talks with Kim Yong-Nam, Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, Xi pledged to promote bilateral exchange and strengthen relations between the two communist countries, Chinese state media said.
The report on state television also showed Xi talking with Yang Hyong Sop, Vice President of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, and visiting the memorial to Kim Il-song, the late great leader and "eternal president" of the hermit Kingdom.
Some analysts have detected strains between Beijing and Pyongyang as China presses its neighbour to abandon nuclear weapons plans. China hosts the six-party talks, which also include North and South Korea, the United States, Japan and Russia.
The United States said at the beginning of the month that it expected North Korea would make a long-delayed declaration of its nuclear activities soon and that fresh six-party talks could start this month. - Copyright Holder: CCTV (China) - NO RESALE MAINLAND CHINA
