- Story Text: A brokerage and investment firm tried to wear a Chinese fortune teller's hat on Thursday (February 5) and announced forecasts for the upcoming Year of the Goat based on feng shui and zodiac signs.
The annual tongue-in-cheek CLSA Feng Shui Index, on its 21st year, looked at the interactions of the five elements - wood, fire, earth, gold and water, and predicted which sectors would get an edge at the upcoming Wood Goat year.
"According to the five elements, wood has some overcoming interactions (feng shui terminology for negative interactions) with earth. Earth power will be restrained a bit this year, but metal and fire will flourish. So metal and fire sectors such as hotels, jewelry, gold and silver, electronics, and even oil and gas should perform quite well this year," said Marco Yau, one of the presenters, who works at CLSA as an associate of Chinese banking research.
The analysts said 2015 would not bode well for Hong Kong's benchmark financial index Hang Seng, because it is an Earth Rooster based on its founding date, and Rooster clashes with Goat.
The Wood Goat, however, is known for its compassion, so overall they are expecting a mediocre year for the index.
"It (Hang Seng Index) is not particularly well compared to the previous goat years, but we think that because goat year is a very harmonious year, it is going to be mediocre, it is going to be slightly up compared to the start of the year," said Cherry Ma, who works as a technology research associate.
The report also tried to gaze into the crystal ball and tell the fortunes of several celebrities, including Jackie Chan's son Jaycee Chan, who was sentenced to six years of imprisonment in Beijing last month for drug-dealing.
"Based on the zodiac outlook, we expect the year of the goat will be a good year for Jaycee Chan, son of Jackie Chan, and there is good chance that he can leave the prison soon and join his family in the Chinese new year," Yau said.
The annual index began in 1992 as a Chinese New Year card for CLSA's clients. It took a hiatus from 2005 to 2008, and was revived in 2009. - Copyright Holder: CCTV (China) - NO RESALE MAINLAND CHINA
