- Story Text: A bus driver managed to steer his vehicle safely to a stop after a lamp post smashed through the windshield and ruptured his spleen, state media reported on Wednesday (March 27).
The incident occurred at 17:01p.m. local time (0901 GMT) on Monday (March 25) and was caught by several surveillance cameras on the bus, broadcaster CCTV said.
Mao, despite his injury, rose to his feet, steered the bus to the roadside, evacuated the 26 passengers on board, and reported the accident to the police, CCTV added.
"I was pinned down by the lamp post and put the bus in gear instinctively. I had no idea which gear it was exactly, I just wanted to slow the bus down. I couldn't see the road, and just tried to drive it to one side of the road. The bus hit the guard rail and finally stopped," Mao said.
The video, aired on CCTV, showed the blue pole bursting through the windshield and knocking driver Mao Zhihao down.
The pole was toppled because of an accident on an adjacent lane on the highway, CCTV said.
Mao is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital, said CCTV. - Copyright Holder: CCTV (China) - NO RESALE MAINLAND CHINA
